Percentage of hands to play

Postby Ouseetteled » Sat Feb 04, 2006 2:15 pm

In a tourney at Poker.com earlier, I was checking my stats, and saw that out of 70 dealt hands, I only played 10 without folding preflop. Now, of those 10 hands, I won or got everyone else to fold on 8 of them. The other 2 put me out of the tourney:roll:

Does this seem like to few hands? Is there a percentage of hands you stay in for? Or at least try to stay in for? Or is it all just dependent on what you're dealt hand to hand, and this is a meaningless stat?

I don't think the stat itself is meaningless. I do think it's a mistake to try to conform your play to fit within a certain parameter...but I think it's good to check against it once in a while to see how you're fitting in.

For example...if you are on an incredible roll, you don't want to start folding good hands just to keep your percentage down. Likewise, if you are card dead for hours, you don't want to start playing crappy hands just to bring your percentage back up. The quality of the cards is more important than the percentage...and over long periods of time, if you're playing quality starting hands, those percentages should come out about right.

I know that I made a major overhaul in my game a while back. I see far fewer flops (done with playing any two sooted cards). And I think my game has improved a lot because of it.

If you go by what most pro's believe then you hands played was right on the button!  You should only see around 20% of the flops and even 20% is a little high.  Now you got to take into consideration what you are playing also if your playing a headsup match then ofcoarse your stats will go way up but in a full table multi you should be at 20 or less.

Dont use the stats as a hard set rule, its is just a nice way of seeing where you might need to concentrate a little more on your game.

When it comes to tracking the percentage of hands you play, 70 hands is a very small sample, which means it's subject to high statistical variance.  To get a decent read on the % you're playing takes at least a few thousand hands.

I think that the type of tourney and hand dealt has to be considered. for instance if the tournament was big then only very few hands should be played in iorder to remain in the tournament. You should win every hand that u play in. You get me

You are playing fine.  Playing 75% of your hands is crazy though.  Play quality hands and you should be okay.  If you get beat, it happens.

i think it all depends on how you feel or how your luck is running, somedays are just bad to play poker, sounds like it was just a bad day, i fold a lot of hands, & still ended up cashing, so just play what you feel is right
