I have a friend who absolutely insists that AK is the 2nd best hand pre-flop. We have this argument regularly, because he refuses to see that KK, QQ or even JJ is better preflop because those are made hands. AK is just 2 high cards that are great if they hit and not so great against JJ when the flop comes in small cards. Any higher "wired pair" is better than AK preflop. mid aor small pairs, well that depends on what comes up. AK loses to 22 if it doesn't hit, so why does everybody go gaga over slick?

Doyle Brunson prefers AK over AA, but if I remember correctly, it is because it is easier to lay down than AA if you dont hit a hand. In bth supersystems Doyle states that the problem with AA is that you often win a small hand or lose a big hand.

Ya, very low or even medium pocket pairs can be dangerous, but they can also be decent in a heads up match.   As i said earlier, i would rather have 55 pre flop than AK any day.   Just my pref though

You know what?

Here is something that scares the heck out of me.

I got PP A's
Someone calls with PP 2's

2's scare heck out of me and that for sure as I have beaten a many of PP's with PP 2's myself. lmao

I hate A-K unless it,s late in a tourney and blinds are high and the game is tightening up! You got to bet them big or just call and hope to hit. But betting them up and missing happens all the time. Don,t fall in love with them and get pot commited !!!  :(

Not a big fan either. Obviously depends on number at table, position, and chip stacks. If you fall in love with any hand 2 much you are doomed. Shorthanded i play this very aggressively otherwise id rather see a cheap flop with lots of callers. If i hit im in if i dont im usually out.

Recently in a head,s up of a tourney, we went back and forth taking turns stealing pots from each other. My opponent had A-Q and 58k chips, i was dealt 2-2(deuces) with 60k chips. He went ALL IN and i shocked him by calling ALL-IN. My pocket 2,s held up and won the tournament. With only 2 players,  a pair against 2 overcards is just a slight favorite !!  :)

AK I'll Take it

Postby Plece1985 » Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:22 am

Ametuers should not play AK. Tournament: if you are going all in your in trouble any two cards can be beat.
The problem ametuers thinking all in is the way to go, WRONG if you have a hand worth going all in you should probly try to maximize the value
Dont you want callers?

Now if your short stack and blinds are catching up with you AK,AQ,AJ are great spots to move in.

I would Take AK suited any day over any pair under 10.

How good is AK?

Seems that everyone is moaning about getting beat with AK these days. I thik it is very overrated online. Iit just a case of misguided expectations. That is why so many online players go all in so often with AK. Always see the flop iwith AK and then make your decisions my advice

As I posted before, AK quite often gets me into trouble. However, last night...

I was playing a multi on Bodog, and must have had AK 7 or 8 times. And they were golden for a change! I knocked out 4 or 5 players with AK. I only had to fold it once, and that was the first time I had it. Eventually finished 7th for $103.95...not bad for a $33 buy in.

Once I know I sucked out...early on, had AK, raised big, got called. Flop comes AK10, I raise, get reraised, push all in...caller flips over QJ for the straight (not sure why he was in the hand preflop, but oh well). And whaddaya know...a K on the river for the boat...woo hoo!

I know it won't always be that way...but it was sure nice for a change!

AK is a great hand preflop in a headsup, however, I would take a pair anyday over AK, you just don't know what is going to flop
