this is how it is, on AP especially you have the odd one or 2 donuts on the table that are betting with any 2 cards, so i say why not join them, crazy your thinking, but no, its only a freeroll so why sit there for 30minutes to get a hand and go out, so in the first 30minutes i play 75% of pots folding stuff like 29 but maybe playing J7 off or something, or maybe K3 suited, i tried this out earlier and within 30minutes i had a 10k stack, where as after 30minutes playing tight, unless i get AA, KK , QQ several times im on 5k maximum maybe even 1500 i started with.

it works with me, so give it a try one day  :)

The key to freerolls is patience. Try to wait it out and hold on for premium hands.  When antes start get more aggressive.  This can steal you alot of pots.

I agree that patience is key. Also, not getting out drawn by a lucky alliner. avoid random all inners at all costs. even sit out for first few levels to avoid unlucky beats aginst people who go all in everyhand.

no matter your style its still just all about survival on that first hr ( that is on a large freeroll)  league games are very different and need to be approached ( I feel ) in a more conservative manner since there are many good players in here -the more wild group hangs out in the 2k ppl games

Charterboss has stated a critical point that I'll support and reinforce.  Quite a few people take chances early to get a larger than average stack.  It's certainly good if you succeed in doing so, but if you don't, you're often out.  You can win without getting a large stack early.  You can't if you're out.  In my case, I've come back to cash a few times to cash and even win after beind down to less than 5 BB.  Never after being out though.

i totally gotta play a lot of pots. you can't wait for a monster while these other idiots are playing every hand and winning pots. i mean don't play terrible hands, but hands like 10 8, and K 7. its the only way to beat the people who play every hand.

I like to be patient although I will tend to see more flops while the blinds are small.

The Best Strategy

Postby Hisay1983 » Sat Dec 17, 2005 3:21 pm

The best strategy is to go figure out your opponent and play them.  Don't try to win every hand just the big ones.  In short play very conservative.  But go off the wall aggressive at times.

I stated this in another thread about SnG's, but it applies to freerolls as well...

Patience is a virtue.  If you don't have it, you're not going to be a successful poker player over the long haul, plain and simple.

Tight early on, then more aggressive as the fish start dying off.  If you make it through the first hour, then you're playing poker.  Until then, it's just a big crapshoot, and if you're playing too aggressively, you're gonna be just another dead fish.

The vast majority of those who end up with a big stack within the first 30 minutes are gone by second break. I agree with the patience viewpoint...I've had WAY more luck restricting what I play to big hands, except when I'm in a blind (my favorite places to be!).
