what the hell is a straddle in poker

I Play alot of online poker. last month i tried my hand at a live poker ring game one of the firehalls was putting on. the term straddle came up. what is it? and why would you do it? it seemed like it was an extra bb beat? please help me?

not sure of the term but I think you are reeering to the first person to act posting a bet double the normal BB before the cards are dealt.

They do this to get the chance to be last to act preflop instead of first. Craziest one I ever saw was when 5 out of the 8 people at the table did it .

yeah, a straddle is the person to the right of the big blind doubling the blind to gain the position of the big blind.  also it raises the bet that has to be called
