KQ - Marriage Hand (NL Holdem)

Postby Hatent1995 » Wed Mar 02, 2005 11:42 pm

KQ...this hand above all others seems to be my worst nightmare. Usually this is how I play it. I will raise with it preflop...usually the size of the pot. If I am reraised I will consider calling depending on the player, but if its a big reraise I'll usually fold. After the flop come my troubles, and it seems to really happen this way 90% of the time. If I hit the flop and bet big I will either get everyone to fold, or I will get called and lose. If I hit the flop and slowplay someone will catch a card and I will lose. If I miss the flop and try to make a play on any limpers I will lose. If I miss the flop and fold then I will see that I had the winner beat. Never fails. What am I doing wrong with this hand? Or am I playing it right and just having bad luck? Any ideas?

I usually just make a medium sized bet since I know I might not have the best hand on flop. Then I let the flop decide whether to continue or not. Remember QK is only good if you hit those face cards or a draw. After all, with a medium size bet you might get more callers...

first unless your in late position i would not bet them

so aggressive preflop. esp. if there were a lot of callers

before you. then, just pay to take a look.

2 nd. i would not slow play them. i usually bet the

pot trying to end the hand.

I love K/Q, and I take Dan Harrington's advice and play it exactly like A-J. I don't call a raise with it, and I only raise with it when (1) I'm on the button and go for a blind steal and raise three times the big blind (2) my favorite play, when I'm in the big blind with it and people have only limped in ahead of me, I raise three times the pot. I have never lost a hand doing this, and I've won some great big pots.

i'll chime in. this is my favorite hand I usually limp with it unless my image is a tight player. not much i can really say but just don't call a big bet on the flop and sometiems you have to fold it when flopping a pair

For any still looking into this forum. K/Q suited and unsuited are dangerous cards to play too aggressively. Everybody forgets that position tends to dictate the hand. KQ is a really good hand to play in late position and in middle position. Early position raises with this hand are not advised unless if you're changing gears.

I hate this hand too. I usually just limp in and let the flop decide if I should fold or play aggressively.

I don't know why everybody hates this hand.  It is a great hand to attack the blinds with from the button.  It has been said before, but I would not raise this in early position.  I will call unless the raiser is betting out 4-5 X BB.  In late position, I will almost always raise with KQ to put the squeeze on the blinds and get them so they don't beat me flopping rags.

After the flop, the flop dictates.  If I don't hit and somebody is betting it out, I'm folding them.

I do not like the KQ, depending on position and stack size, i will lay it down more often then I play in it a big tournament. KQ has lost me a lot of money because generally when u hit that K it might still lose a very big pot to an ace king.

I agree with donvic, don't try to slowplay anything. It's tempting but it will screw you in the long run. Just get what you can even if it's not a lot.
