I have hit 3 Royal Flushes in my Poker life, alas, non of them in a live game, so I could not see other players faces when it happened lol (for gloating purposes you understand
). Two of them happened at Poker Stars, I think, within few hrs of each other. One was in a limit ring game, so I made some cash but not that much, even though one other person hit nut flush at the same time and another nut str. The betting got jamed but the table was only 1/2 so, as I said, it was not an extravagant win. The other Royal on Stars I didn't even overbet and all the other players ended up folding to me by the river, so I had to show it off (how embaraisng lol).
My first Royal Flush ever was the worst as far as timing is concerned. I hit it while playing on play tables (so does it count? lol) on Pacific Poker trying to figure out if I want to play there at all (and I do play the freerolls but their tourney software is unfair, I think, and I tend to get dissconected by the server at crucial moments.) So, I do not play PP that often.
So, here, just for fun, is a little statistical calculation for you; and hopefuly life does not always follow statistics:
Chances of hitting one of the possible 4 Royal Flushes is:
One in 649,740 hands of 5 card poker (less hands if you consider 7 cards)
Since I hit 3 Royals alteady I should statistically hit only one more in next roughly 650k hands. But, to make it even more fun, if I was to hit 4 Royal flushes, which should only happen for me once in 2,598,960 hands, lets see how long to the next one. Lets say that I play conservatively 1000 hands a week ( I do have a life you know lol) so roughly 2,600 weeks to hit 4 royal flushes 2,600/52 (weeks a year) = ....drum roll...... 50 years.
Conclusion: as far as statiscics is concerned, hitting 3 royal flushes within few months of playing is an anomaly (am I very lucky -- my ex says no lol). I should only hit 4 royal flushes per 50 years of playing 1000 hands of 5 card stud poker per week. So, to keep statisctical gods happy, I might not hit another Royal Flush untill 2055. If i am still alive, by then i will be an old quiet old fart .... will I even remember what poker or a royal flush for that matter is
On an offside, lets put 1000 hands of poker into perspective:
If you play 1 hand a minute (very possible on line) thats 1000 minutes a week or 1000/60 (min/hr) = 16 and 2/3 hrs of continuous non stop playing a week, double that and add some break time (eat, shower and the other you know lol) to make it more realistic makes it 32 let say 40 hrs a week of continuous play for 50 years just to hit 4 royal flushes lol. Full time job, and you thought Poker was fun lol. (If you play 4 tables at a time, devide that by 4 which gives you 12.5 years to do it -- however, I challange you to play 4 tables at the same time 40 hrs a week --- try, you will either go nuts or have a much better constitution than I do--- 2 hrs at a time on 4 tables is about an absolute max for me -- go ahead call me a whimp lol)
So, good survey topic would be: how many hands do you play a week and how many hrs did it take (including travel to and from and just general time where your main activity is Poker )
